Dan English died in the prime of his life in 1931, at age 29. The famous Dan English trophy has been awarded in his name starting in 1932,To the Senior Connecticut State snare drum champion. The trophy was retired in 1988. Lancraft snare drummers have won the trophy 15 years until ending corps competition in 1975.

Hugh joined Lancraft in 1941 as a snare drummer. In 1987 he was inducted in to the National Drum Corps Hall of fame in Allentown, Pennsylvania
